Hazardous Harold & the Common Core State Standards
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) provide a framework for developing literacy skills that prepare students for academic success and lifelong learning.
Hazardous Harold stories support many Common Core learning goals within English Language Arts, particularly in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, and collaborative discussion.
Classroom activities linked to Harold stories help students develop the ability to:
• read and interpret narrative texts
• analyse characters and their motivations
• identify cause and effect in story events
• discuss ideas respectfully with classmates
• express opinions supported by evidence
• expand vocabulary and language awareness
By reflecting on Harold’s experiences, students practise critical thinking and communication skills that are central to the Common Core literacy standards.
